Remsen-Union eliminates Akron-Westfield in four sets
AKRON -- Remsen-Union avenged an early-season, five-set defeat to Akron-Westfield with a 3-1 victory over the Lady Westerners on Tuesday.
R-U (14-8) lost to A-W (12-11) in five sets back on Sept. 4, but the Lady Rockets won on Tuesday by the scores of 18-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-21.
'We were given a second chance and we embraced it," said R-U senior Kelsey Ruden. "We left it all on the court and we're not looking back."
"We knew it was going to be a hard fight," said A-W head coach Mollie Koopmans said. "They were looking forward and saying, 'Okay, we've already beat them. We can do it again.'
"It just didn't go that way."
A-W won the first two sets in the two teams' first match this season, but was unable to capitalize on the one-set lead in the regional quarterfinal against R-U.
"We came out and we fought, but it just fell a little short," Koopmans said. "My team has the attitude of never giving up. It just didn't go our way this time."
Haley Coyle and Emily Miller were the Lady Westerners' only two seniors this season.
"We definitely have progressed through the season," Koopmans said. "I know we'll have a strong pack coming up next year, but we definitely improved. From Day 1 we had strong team chemistry. I thought, overall, we did pretty well."
Miller hit nine kills in the loss to R-U, bringing her season total to a team-best 87. Junior Bethany Eastman hit five kills and finished third on the team with 60 kills. Junior Kayla Tindall tallied 63 kills this season.
Junior Dana Hedlund had 17 assists on Tuesday and 284 this season. Junior Jordan Hansen led A-W in digs once again Tuesday with 12, bringing her season total to a team-best 182. Coyle made eight digs and sophomore Kortney Hedlund made six as both finished with 69 digs this season.
Tindall was 16-for-22 serving with five aces in the loss. Tindall's tally of 27 assists this season was second on A-W to Kortney Hedlund's 29.
Dana Hedlund was 17-for-19 serving with two aces. Coyle hit three aces on 10-for-14 serving. Coyle was third for A-W with 20 aces this season. Eastman finished 11-for-11 serving against R-U.
Brittany Sudtelgte led the Lady Rockets on Tuesday with five ace serves on 25-for-25 serving and nine kills
Brittany Weikel hit seven kills, as well as four aces on 7-for-11 serving. Taylor Weiler was 18-for-20 serving with three aces. Weiler also hit six kills.
Hailey Loutsch was 15-for-15 serving with one ace. Courtney Loutsch was 8-for-9 serving with one ace. Karlie Hansen hit one ace on 6-for-7 serving.
Courtney Loutsch also hit five kills and Danika Tentinger hit four. Hailey Loutsch finished with 16 assists and Karlie Hansen made seven assists.
Weikel led R-U in digs with 20. Libero Rachel West made 17 digs and Weiler made 15. Sudtelgte made 10 digs. Courtney Loutsch and Hailey Loutsch had five and four digs, respectively.
Sudtelgte made two solo blocks and assisted on seven more. Courtney Loutsch made one solo block and two assisted blocks. Tentinger and Weikel each made three assisted blocks. Ruden also assisted on two blocks.
R-U will be back in Akron on Friday to face No. 9 Gehlen Catholic (19-10) in the Class 1A Region 1 semifinals.
